What insurance does a hairdresser need?

This depends upon your circumstances, if you operate from a salon then you will need to look at salon insurance, but for the purposes of this post we are going to look at the liability insurance requirements for a hairdresser, the levels of cover you may require, the legal requirements and the special issues  that face the hairdressing profession with the treatment risk.

Public Liability Insurance for Hairdressers

All businesses have a need for public liability cover, hairdressers in particular come into contact with a wide variety of people everyday, visiting people’s homes and are constantly exposed to the risk of causing personal injury or damage to third party property.

A hairdressers public liability insurance policy protects the policyholder against claims made against them in respect of their legal liability for personal injury or property damage suffered by others and allegedly caused by the policyholder in the execution and course of their business.

There is no currently legal requirement for a hairdresser to hold public liability insurance, although you consider the cover as an essential business expense..

Under the policy you will select a limit of indemnity, this is the maximum amount an insurance company will pay out in respect of any one incident. Common limits for hairdressers are £1M and £2M, although higher limits are available.

HairdressersTreatment Insurance

Liability for personal injury arising our of the application of a treatment is not automaticallly covered under a stanadrd public liability policy and maybe specifacally exluded under the policy, here is an example of the wording from a leading insurer in this market

Exclusions to Sub-Section A – Public Liability Sub-Section A does not cover liability arising out of treatment given or administered, except for any treatments that have been specifically noted on the Schedule, by the Insured or Employees, or any failure to give advice or treatment or any lack of professional skill

The cover must be added back into the policy and it is essential that your liability insurance provides this extension as this is the area of cover where a claim is most likely to arise. Other insurers handle this situation in different ways, you must make sure that the cover is there!

When included the limit of indemnity for the treatment risk is the same as the main policy limit unless otherwise stated by the insurance company.

Am I insured for other treatments carried out as a hairdresser?

A word of caution here, if you undertake other activities within your business such as ear piercing, beauty treatments, nail polishing and treatments, you must  ensure that the cover in respect of these treatments is included in the policy. This is easily done for the most common treatments that are regularly undertaken. Specialist treatments and therapies may require a change to the policy or indeed a different insurance policy. Do not assume that if you have treatment cover included that you are covered for all eventualities.

Hairdressers Employers Liability Insurance

If you employ anyone in connection with the business it is a legal requirement that you hold an employers liability insurance. There are a few exceptions to this and you can review this information on our main employers liability insurance page. The minimum legal requirement is for a policy with a £5m limit although in practice insurance companies in the UK offer minimum standard limit of £10M

How much does hairdressers liability insurance cost?

The good news is that liability insurance for a self employed hairdresser is very cost effective with annual insurance policies for a basic limit of £1m costing less than £50 per year. The cost increases as you increase the limit of indemnity or add additional people or employees to your policy.
