Alok Sharma, the UK’s Housing and Planning Minister has opened the country’s first “plot shop” in Bicester Oxfordshire. Located on the high street this first of its kind outlet is open to customers who wish to build their own home on plots available for sale on the Graven Hill site in Oxfordshire.
The new Graven Hill site upon completion will include some 1900 new homes and the new service is designed to provide not only the access to the plots but also to expert advice to those wishing to build their own home.
The opening of the new ploy shop is in line with the Government’s housing white paper that committed to the doubling of the number of custom and self build in the UK.
Managing Director of Graven Hill Ltd, Karen Curtin commented;
We are delighted to welcome Alok Sharma in officially opening the Graven Hill plot shop. The shop’s town centre location has proven to be integral to its success since our soft launch this summer, and we invite anyone thinking of building or customising their next home to visit the shop for an informal chat on the options available or arrange a visit to site.
Whilst custom and self build home projects have been popular for some time, the urgent need to solve the UK housing shortage has seen added impetus into supporting these projects.
The emergence of custom builds as an alternative provides those who would like to design and develop their own home to be fully involved in the design of their house whilst avoiding the pitfalls and difficulties that many face, often through lack of experience in the actual construction phase of more traditional self build projects.
These schemes have previously enjoyed great success in both Germany and The Netherlands and it is hoped that that success will be replicated in the UK providing new homeowners with a real alternative and helping to address the housing shortage.
